Commitment and dedication to the Cayman community is ingrained in the members of Lions Club of Grand Cayman, so it should come as no surprise when called upon to assist in the fight against COVID-19 there was no hesitation.

Earlier this month, as local coronavirus cases and the need for testing and vaccinating residents grew, the Club knew its centre would have been an important asset to the community to face these challenges.

Often used to host events, celebrations and other community-oriented activities, the centre has now become a key tool in rendering saving living assistance through the Club’s generosity. The centre is currently being used free of charge.

Director of Primary Health Care and Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Samuel Williams-Rodriguez expressed gratitude for the partnership with the Club.

“Relocation of the COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic to the Lions Centre was fitting due to its central location and its capacity. Public Health is grateful to the Lions Club for generously donating this space towards the continued operation of the clinic. Their contribution allows us to continue to work towards the prevention of the spread of COVID-19 and the protection of people on our islands,” he said.

Lions Club President Eric Anderson said the centre and the Club has been of service to the community for decades and Lions are proud to continue that tradition during this health emergency.

“When the Health Services Authority approached our Club about using the centre for vaccinations and PCR testing, our Club was more than happy to assist,” he said, adding “For the last 49 years the Lions Club of Grand Cayman has taken great pride in their ability to serve the needs of our community. This is just another opportunity for our club to help our community when it’s in need.”

Vaccinated Lions, including senior Lion John Ebanks, also utilized the clinic to get his booster shot.

As a proud member of the over 70 age group, Ebanks said, he has seen the value of vaccinations over the years and encouraged others to get the jab.

“From my boyhood days I've heard about vaccine. I still have scars of them and I didn't know their contents then and still don’t know, but what I do know is the shots kept you from getting sick then. So my advice to the unvaccinated… get your shots it’s your life. I am happy I took my booster shot because it lessens my chance of contracting the virus,” he said.

Ebanks also urged the community to adhere to the health protocols.

“Wear your masks. Adjust to social distancing, it’s a must. Stay safe and take care,” he said.
