The Milwaukee Bucks won the NBA championship so convincingly last season that consensus was that this was the start of a dynasty.
Even Kevin Durant in the summer said that the Bucks were “forming somewhat of a dynasty.”
Durant backtracked his statement after the Brooklyn Nets’ loss to the Bucks in the 2021 season opener last week saying “maybe I was reaching a little bit” but he acknowledged that Milwaukee have improved considerably in recent seasons and have a nucleus of a team that compares with any other elite side.
When Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton arrived in Milwaukee in 2013, they suffered through a 15-win season. Results gradually improved culminating in reaching the Eastern Conference Finals in 2019 under current head coach Mike Budenholzer, and, of course, becoming NBA Champions this year, beating the Pheonix Suns 4-2. Giannis is the Bucks king and a coveted target by the more established teams.
Giannis, a two-time MVP and five-time All-Star, does not appear to be leaving Milwaukee anytime soon. He’s demonstrated his loyalty over eight years as the Bucks have changed personnel and gained momentum. The Bucks look like a stronger unit than the Toronto Raptors who shocked the basketball world with their championship win in 2019, so it’s possible they can reach the pinnacle again.
