MORE COVID COMMUNITY-SPREAD IN SCHOOLS

With more community-spread cases of COVID-19 being uncovered in Cayman, health authorities are stepping up their appeal to the public to get vaccinated to reduce the risk of serious illness in the event they contract the disease.
As of Friday, further cases of local circulation of the disease are being reported linked to schools in particular.
In the latest batch of positive results, six school children including a pre-schooler have tested positive.
They are part of 13 new cases which include two travellers.
Of the six infected students, three are from Prospect Primary School, one from John Gray High School (a direct contact of a Prospect student and already in isolation), one from George Town Primary School and a pre-schooler from Triple “C” School.
The other two cases are adults who have had contact with the students.
Chief Nursing Officer, Dr. Hazel Brown, said: “All the children are doing well, with most of the current cases being asymptomatic. We continue to appeal to the public to take the vaccine if you are able to do so.”
She is also strongly urging all residents to take the advised precautions to keep themselves, their families and the community safe.
“Vaccinated or not, please take all measures to protect yourself and our community – wear a mask, sanitise your hands and practice physical distance when interacting outside of your family and household.” said Dr Brown said.
As of 8am Friday, 1st October 2021, 688 COVID-19 tests have been carried out since the previous report on Thursday.
There have been 107,039 Covid-19 vaccinations given in total in the Cayman Islands. Of these, 55,200 (78% of 71,106) have had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 51,759 (73%) have completed the two-dose course.
According to the Chief Nursing Officer, “Although we now have established community spread of the virus, as of this morning the last admission was on 8 September. The inpatient was vaccinated and continues to improve.”
