Calling all food handlers to get certified

The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) has expanded the capacity of its Food Handlers’ Certification Courses to accommodate an increase in registration ahead of the many events involved in this year’s Pirate Fest, Thank Giving traditions, and the Christmas season.

The one-day Basic Food Hygiene training can now accommodate 30 participants per session every Wednesday until the end of the year. “Additional resources have been put in place to facilitate this mandatory training as we have already seen an increase in the demand. We are calling on new personnel working in the food industry and anyone wishing to continue as food handlers after the expiration of their certification, which is only valid for three years”, said DEH Director, Mr. Richard Simms.

The Basic Food Handlers’ training provides participants with sufficient knowledge to prevent food-borne illness and the spread of food-borne disease causing agents. Operators of Food Businesses are reminded that DEH requires all personnel handling food to be trained and certified.

Sessions will run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Red Cross facility. To register, please contact the DEH at 949-6696 or via email at dehcustomerservice@gov.ky. The cost of registration is $15 per person and includes the cost of materials. Payment should be made at DEH headquarters, located at 580 North Sound Road, between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Interested persons on Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are asked to call 948-2321 to make arrangements. Participants registered who already paid for the course will be given priority.
