The Jamaica Football Federation finally ran out of patience and sacked faltering head coach Theodore ‘Tappa’ Whitmore last week hoping it is not too late for them to reach the World Cup finals next year.
Nevertheless, new head coach Paul Hall says said he wants a long-term role with the Reggae Boyz despite being based in England where he guides Queens Park Rangers Under-23s.
Hall said his job in England will not get in the way of the Jamaican assignment. “Jamaica hasn't been affected since I've been here. I'd never have taken the position if Jamaica would've been affected. I love Jamaica too much to make Jamaica be affected,” he insisted.
“QPR have given me their full support in what I'm doing. They've been fantastic in the way how they have supported me until now and they continue to offer their support,” the English-born former Jamaica forward explained.
Jamaica will play a friendly against Peru in Lima on 20 January. The date does not fall within a FIFA match window and Hall will use the opportunity to look assess players and game-plan for the three World Cup qualifiers starting with Mexico a week later.
Like the Reggae Boyz, Peru are fighting for a spot at the FIFA World Cup in 2022. Jamaica are sixth with seven points after eight games with six to come. Three teams from CONCACAF qualify directly, while the fourth-place team will play in an Intercontinental playoff.
Peru are tied for fifth with Colombia on 17 points after 14 games, with four games to go. Four teams qualify directly from CONMEBOL while the fifth team must play in an intercontinental playoff.
