Turks and Caicos Islands Premier Charles Washington Misick

The new government in the Turks and Caicos Islands has given an update to citizens and residents on its first 50 days in office.

Flanked by other ministers in a press conference, Premier Charles Washington Misick spoke of delivering on a promise of a Pandemic Relief Package including removing import tariffs on a range of essential items as one of their main achievements.

Buying back beach access land from private owners to be used for public parks and getting started on a series of initiatives to promote more local investment in the economy in addition to foreign investors were also listed.

Mr Misick also reported on the first steps towards disbanding district boards and replacing them with a local government framework, as well as setting up a direct citizens hotline to the government “rather than complaining on social media” he said.

He updated on the management of the public health challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic with several steps already put in place including a moratorium on new work permits.

He also said that his government has made it easier for persons who had initially failed to qualify for government COVID relief support to now be included in the stimulus packages.

“Every Turks and Caicos Islander impacted will continue to be assisted at the maximum level affordable,” Premier Misick stated.

With approval now received from the British government, Mr Misick’s government will soon have an eighth ministry added to the cabinet.
