Non-Profit: The Pines Retirement Home

This column features a non-profit organisation (NPO) registered in the Cayman Islands. If you’d like your charity to be considered for this column (which means free publicity!) please register your charity as an NPO with General Registry by 31 July 2018.

Caring for the elderly and improving the quality of life for older persons in the Cayman Islands is at the heart of why The Pines Retirement Home (PRH) exists.

The PRH provides the best possible service through its facilities. The PRH is a 48-bed, charitable organization that provides residential accommodation, 24/7, for older persons who suffer from a variety of chronic conditions associated with ageing. Since 1983, a voluntary board of directors has been actively involved with management in charting the direction and strategic plan of the PRH.

Our services include:

  •  Residential Care, which provides ongoing care by registered nurses, enrolled nurses and health care assistants.
  •  Respite Care Programme, which has many of the same features as the Residential Care programme but is intended for individuals who require placement at the PRH for short periods of time.
  •  Day Care Programme, which meet the needs of older persons who live independently or with their families but require daytime support.
  • Assisted Living Care, as the PRH owns and manages seven assisted-living villas located alongside the main building. The villas are intended for individuals who require less care and supervision than the residents in the main building, but could benefit from daily visits from a nurse to monitor their condition.

At the PRH, our goal is to provide the elderly with comfortable surroundings, allowing them to complete their circle of life.

The PRH has its own in-house 10-week vocational training course in home care aide. Thus far, seven students have graduated the course. The course is taught twice a year, in February and August, by qualified staff. The classes are held at the PRH on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, from 6 pm to 8pm.

The classes include one-hour orientation, 40 hours of studies, and 10 hours of hands-on training experience. The objective is to train persons interested in caring for the elderly, either in their home environment or in care facilities. It is our hope to recruit graduating high school students, offering this path as an optional vocation.

The PRH enjoys a great deal of community support. Local businesses and social clubs provide monthly birthday parties, and some evening meals. The residents enjoy a number of activities including outings, interactions with children, pet therapy, and physical therapy. Haircuts are offered monthly by a local volunteer, while arts and crafts are enjoyed throughout the day.
