OfReg has announced the release of a further 6MW of additional capacity which will be extended to Distributed Renewable Energy Programmes including the Consumer-Owned Renewable Energy (CORE) and Distributed Energy Resources (DER) programmes. This follows the 3MW of additional capacity made available on 1 March earlier this year.
The 6MW completes the 9MW total additional capacity expansion plan that the grid can currently accommodate within technical operation limits. 1MW of this current release is being reserved for the Cayman Islands Government
Speaking on the release of the additional 6MW, OfReg Interim CEO, Mr. Peter Gough said, “We are pleased to confirm the release of this additional capacity to consumer-owned distributed renewable energy programmes. This is another important step in managing the sustainability and stability of the national grid infrastructure and increasing Cayman’s renewable energy power generation.”
OfReg is committed to the long-term protection and sustainability of our critical national infrastructure such as our electricity grid. Grand Cayman’s transmission and distribution grid is recognised as one of the most stable and robust systems, with one of the lowest outages rates, in the region.
Distributed generation programmes, such as CORE and DER, are a key part of delivering the long-term goals of the National Energy Policy (NEP) and continue to provide incentives for consumers to generate energy from renewable sources.”
Mr. Gough continued, “It is also good news for consumers, giving more households and small businesses the opportunity to connect renewable energy systems, such as small-scale solar systems or wind turbines, to CUC’s distribution system and to reduce their monthly energy bills by generating their own electricity while remaining connected to the grid.
“We will continue to balance the opportunity for further expansion of renewable energy power generation by protecting those consumers who do not have renewable energy sources from being unfairly charged or disadvantaged.”
The plan is for the capacity to be available starting on 1 July 2023.
