Pirates Week 2019: Shipwrecked

Thousands of people line the streets to watch the spectacle of the Pirates Week "mock invasion" and its good-natured fun which boasts a new twist every year.

This year’s theme is Shipwrecked and will highlight the cultural importance of the Cayman Catboat (a boat first designed and built by Daniel Jervis in 1904 in Cayman Brac).

The Cayman Catboat Club is a non-profit Cayman Islands Cultural Preservation Organisation which aims to preserve the Catboat and shipbuilding trade and pass on the unique history that surrounds Cayman's maritime heritage.

There is still time for visitors to pack their bags and book a Pirates in Paradise hotel stay (link below) to experience this unique festival.

For more information on these accommodation packages log on to www.piratesweekfestival.com.

Heritage Days Connects Fantasy With Culture

The District Heritage Days are an integral part of the festival, tying pirate fantasy to the history of the Cayman Islands and the culture of its people.

These events are put on by volunteer committees within each district in Grand Cayman and on both sister islands.

These Heritage Days showcase that district’s specific history, important community figures, traditional arts and crafts, as well as local and national dishes, drinks, desserts and cultural dances.

Older folks are enlisted to attend and can be seen demonstrating the techniques of how to make these utilitarian art pieces, passing on knowledge and culture to younger generations.

District Heritage Days are as follows:

• Tuesday, 12th November - East End

• Wednesday, 13th November - West Bay

• Thursday, 14th November - North Side

• Friday, 15th November - Bodden Town

• Saturday, 16th November - George Town

Pirates Week Festival dates are as follows:

• Cayman Brac: 1st-3rd November

• Grand Cayman: 7th-11th November

• Little Cayman: 15th-17th November
