Police Investigate Incident at Government High School

Shortly before 3:30PM on Thursday, 2 September, officers responded to a report of an incident at a government high school. It was reported that a school bus had returned to the school due to an altercation involving a student and a bus warden. When the bus arrived at the school a member of staff entered and attempted to speak to the student involved. The student assaulted the staff member, striking her multiple times and returning to the back of the bus.

While officers were at the location conducting inquiries, a family member of the student arrived and immediately began behaving in an aggressive and threatening manner, making serious threats towards the staff members and officers present. She then left the location with the student.

The member of staff who was assaulted attended the Cayman Islands Hospital for treatment for what appear to be minor injuries and was subsequently discharged.

In a release on Friday, The Department of Education Services (DES) expressed its concern regarding the incident involving students and staff of the Clifton Hunter High School which occurred.

“The health and safety of our students and staff are at the forefront of our operations, and we are committed to maintaining a safe and harmonious school environment. Students, staff and other adults that interact with our students are all expected to relate to each other in a respectful manner.” stated DES Director Mr. Mark Ray.

The school has launched an internal investigation into the incident and will implement the prescribed protocols for addressing the identified issues.

Mr. Ray continued, “We will provide the Clifton Hunter High School students and staff with the requisite support to appropriately address the allegations, and work to prevent a reoccurrence of any similar situation.”

The matter is also under investigation by the RCIPS, and officers are supporting school staff and other relevant agencies in their response.
