Primary Netball Champions Crowned

By Flynn Bush

The Truman Bodden Sports Complex has four netball courts and they were all in use on Wednesday, December 4th. This was the culmination of the Primary School netball season full of thrills and skills. The two divisions, Under-9 and Under-11, both had played a full season of games in the round-robin format and the top two teams from each of two groups had been determined. So, the third-place games and finals were set.

In the younger age group, a small school, Edna Moyle Primary School, was scheduled to face a perennial powerhouse, Cayman Prep, for third place. Ultimately, the Prep athletes proved to be too much for their opponents and claimed the bronze slot.

For the finals, TMPS (formerly BTPS) took the court to do battle with the team from George Town Primary (GTPS). For the first few minutes, this was a more evenly matched game as both teams showed sparks of brilliance. It was not long, though, before BTPS enforced their dominance and raced ahead. When the dust had all settled, the team from Bodden Town had claimed the crown.

For the older girls, the Under-11 division, the third-place game pitted EMPS against TMPS. The game ended up being a lopsided affair, despite the athletes from EMPS’ valiant efforts. The Bodden Town team soared and scored at will and the game ended with the score 12-1 in their favor.

In the finals of the Under-11 division, it was Prospect Primary (PPS) who had gone undefeated during a tough regular season, going against George Town Primary. GTPS was hoping to be the David to PPS’ Goliath and take down a formidable foe. From the beginning, though, it looked like a different version of that famous story. The Prospect players took control and did not relinquish it straight through to the final whistle. PPS were the newest champions of the Under-11 Primary School Netball League.

With the skill demonstrated by the players from all teams during this season, and the obvious progression throughout the three months of play, the future appears bright for Cayman netball. With a continued drive, some determined hard-work, and the undying support of our community, these players will form a very strong and talented base from which to form our national team.
