The period for mandatory quarantining will be reduced from 14 days to 10 from March 22nd.
The announcement was made by Premier Alden McLaughlin in a specially called press conference on Wednesday.
Stating that “as a country we have done extremely well with the vaccine roll-out”, The Premier said that Cayman had reached a threshold that now allows the government to make this further significant step in relaxing COVID-19 restrictions.
“I am extremely pleased to announce that we have reached a much-anticipated milestone,” Mr McLaughlin announced breaking from campaigning for the April 14th snap elections
“We have now vaccinated well over 91% of those in our population over the age of 60. This gives us confidence that the most vulnerable have been protected from the worst of the COVID-19 disease.”
“With this target having been met,” Mr McLaughlin confirmed, “I am able to announce that from the 22nd of March the required quarantine period will be reduced from 14 to 10 days for those who have completed a valid vaccination program at least two weeks before travelling to the Cayman Islands, provided that everyone to their quarantine group also been vaccinated.”
Other safety protocols remain in place including a requirement for a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of travelling as well as a negative test upon arrival in Cayman.
Stating that “we do not believe we have any community transmission” the Premier described it as “a most enviable position to be in.”
But he was quick to add that “we still maintain a degree of caution for three principal reasons.”
Premier McLaughlin said the Ministry of Health is closely monitoring the global developments to better understand the effectiveness of the vaccines, and also “monitoring what happens around us for those travellers who wish to come to Cayman.”
Meanwhile, HE Governor Martyn Roper announced that three further shipments of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine from the UK; two this month and one in April.
Those consignments totalling 63,000 doses will bring the total vaccines sent to Cayman from the British government to 100,00 doses.
