The RCIPS is aware of false information circulating on social media, suggesting that the RCIPS and another law enforcement agency have deliberately failed Caymanians in the recent local police recruitment drive to favour hiring nationals from other jurisdictions.
They have categorically stated that this information is inaccurate and misleading.
On the 24 of April 2024, the RCIPS launched an extensive local recruitment campaign specifically aimed at Caymanians and individuals with Permanent Residency with the right to work.
As part of the criteria applicants are required to be Caymanian (as defined under the Cayman Islands Immigration Act) or Permanent Resident (with the right to work without restrictions); be physically fit, computer literate, and must hold a minimum of a High School Diploma or a General Education Degree (GED) from an accredited institution with a minimum of five (5) CXC passes or equivalent, two (2) of which should be in English and Mathematics.
A total of 803 persons applied. Of this number, 354 persons met the eligibility requirements (Caymanian, or PR and RERC holders).
Following an initial vetting process, a total of 137 applicants were invited to sit the entrance examinations which consisted of questions to demonstrate knowledge of numeracy, literacy and comprehension skills.
Several candidates indicated that they were unable to sit the examinations held on both islands (Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac) on the 01 June 2024, due to various reasons. Every effort has been made to accommodate these candidates by scheduling further opportunities to sit the examination.
A total of 51 candidates were invited to undergo the fitness test, accommodations were also made for rescheduling where the set dates and times were inconvenient for the candidates.
After an initial vetting process (background checks) eight (8) applicants thus far failed due to adverse information, including discrepancies found in other eligibility requirements.
So far, a total of 16 candidates passed the full eligibility criteria, for recruit police constables and 13 for recruit auxiliary constables.
It is crucial to note that our vetting process is ongoing, including thorough checks of individuals' immigration status. This further demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that only Caymanians and persons with Permanent Residency with the right to work are invited to join the RCIPS.
Commissioner Kurt Walton states, "As Commissioner of Police I want to emphasize that we will not compromise the standards of the RCIPS by employing individuals who do not meet the requirements to become police officers. Our commitment is to uphold the highest standards of integrity, fairness, and transparency throughout the recruitment process."
