RCIPS Road Safety Operation

In response to continued community concerns of dangerous driving behaviour in the Eastern District and in particular, on weekends, the Eastern District Officers, including the Traffic and Roads Policing Officers, have been carrying out an enforcement operation. Operation Borage has been targeting illicit driving activities with a heavy emphasis on speeding.

During last week, over 50 tickets were issued by the officers in various parts of the Eastern Districts. Of the number of tickets issued more than half were speed related offences. Officers have also been inspecting vehicles while carrying out vehicle check points (VCPs), and have inspected over 120 vehicles during the operation, which resulted in tickets being issued for expired registration and three persons being warned for intended prosecution for other more serious vehicle related offenses.

The community has since shared their concerns about motorcycles that have not only been disturbing the tranquillity of the community, but also the safety on the roadways, especially in the early hours of the morning. We suspect that many of these motorcycles are unregistered and not insured. In these instances, the vehicle will be seized by the police, the rider may be arrested or warned for intended prosecution, and the motorcycle will not be released until proof of ownership is provided, at which time the vehicle must be wrecked away from the location.

The RCIPS would like to remind the public of the cost of speeding in the Cayman Islands, which is $20 for every mile over the speed limit you were travelling. Tickets are not issued in excess of $500. Anyone driving at a speed which exceeds such a cost will be warned for intended prosecution and on conviction will be made to pay a fine and will be disqualified for a period no less than 6 months. Additionally, anyone travelling at a speed which more than doubles the speed limit of that area, may be automatically disqualified from driving and warned for intended prosecution. “Our officers will be carrying out Operation Borage this weekend and for the foreseeable future,” says Superintendent Barrow, “We will be targeting speeding, DUI and dangerous and reckless driving as a priority to curtail the occurrences of serious and fatal collisions, however, other offenses that are observed during the operations will also be dealt with. The goal is to ensure that our roadways are safe for everyone, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians alike. Let us all do our part in “making the Cayman Islands safer”.
