On Monday 10th, October this dynamic event got underway at the UCCI Campus on Cayman Brac. 15 Brac adult residents, the two lecturers who will be delivering the courses instruction Mr. Sean Wood and Mr. Michael Bryan, The Enrollment Representative Mrs. Sasha Lee Thomas, Deputy Registrar for the Campus Mrs. Shavon Bodden and Mr. Cleveland Julien Project Officer- Profession & Technical Education and Training were in attendance.
After introducing himself Mr. Julien then invited each of the participants to give a brief introduction of themselves. A common thread that resonated from each one was, “ I am here to be able to enhance my skills and be successful with the Certification.” This pleased Mr. Julien tremendously.
RESEMBID- Resilience, Sustainability, Energy and Micro Biodiversity, is a program which is free, and funded with a European Union Grant of $405,000 to train 55 Caymanians to obtain sustainable employment and long term economic resilience in the 4 critical fields of Tourism, ICT, Renewable Energy and Construction. This grant was awarded to assist the community after COVID- 19.
This reality was made possible through the dedicated partners including WORC, the Chamber of Commerce, GreenTech, Cayman Islands Contarctors Association and other private sector enterprises.
Mr. Julien then walked the participants through all the various aspects of requirements to complete their individual choice of study. He emphasized to the attendees that what he envisions to materialize from the courses is that, “each of you will become an employee that the employer wants to keep.” Mr. Julien also went at lengths to inform participants that the Code of Conduct for the duration of the course is an integral part of their commitment to succeed. He introduced the participants thereafter to the two courses. Certificate in Basic Construction Skills, and Certificate in Microsoft Office Specialist. He was pleased to note that these are modular approaches with assessment at the end of each module.
Mr. Bryan, Lecturer for the Construction Course then addressed the participants whereby he encouraged them to ensure that they strive for excellence always and, “ I will do my endeavour to ensure your certification.”
Mr. Wood, lecturer for the Microsoft Course then addressed the group as well. “ Commitment and perseverance are key. I know as adults it can be difficult to manage multiple demands on your time, but I am here to help you in every way possible. I want you to succeed.”
Mr. Julien concluded his presentation by telling the group that they have made an excellent choice. “ This programme aims to ensure that each of you at the end would proudly walk away with an internationally recognized certification which will make you both marketable and employable. This will serve you well if there is that desire to work outside of the Cayman jurisdiction.”
The presentation concluded with the singing and reading of the pledge. This was followed by a tour of the UCCI Campus with the group.
