Small but spirited group marches against high gas prices

A small but spirited group of protesters marched from the Government Administration Building on Elgin Avenue to the Legislative Assembly Wednesday morning, showing their disgust with the price paid at the pumps for fuel.

The march was delayed by more than an hour due to persistent rains.

After arriving at the Legislative Assembly, the group was eventually met by Premier Alden McLaughlin and Planning & Infrastructure Minister Kurt Tibbetts, who accepted the petitions and spoke about their plans to address the concerns through legislation while the Assembly meets this week.

“This is meant to be a show of support for you all and we want you to know that you have our full support as you embark on getting some price relief on that one commodity that we cannot do without,” said George Ebanks, the organiser of the march, as he presented Premier Alden McLaughlin with a box said to be containing more than 12,000 signatures.

“We note your concerns. We are happy for your support. The government shares your concerns about fuel prices in Cayman and we are moving, and have been moving…to address this,” Mr McLaughlin said.

“I thank you all for taking the time to come and show your support for what were are trying to do,” he added.
