A software error is being blamed for a traveller being permitted to quarantine at a residence which did not meet the approved criteria.
The details of the software glitch were not disclosed but a press release on Thursday sent from the Government Information Service on behalf of Travel Cayman, said the agency investigated the matter and “software engineers are rectifying the issue.”
While it was not clear if the software error has been finally ‘rectified’, the unsigned statement sent from the GIS on a Travel Cayman letterhead does say that “additional verification protocols have been put in place and manual checks are being carried out in tandem.”
It said the traveller's request to quarantine at a private residence was denied and the person was instead approved for a Government-sponsored facility.
However, the statement claims that due to an error in the system, the traveller was transported to the unapproved quarantine address originally requested.
It is not clear if during the transfer to, or arrival at the location, there was any communication by the traveller or anyone else that the destination reached was not the one approved.
Also not clear from the press release is how long the person had been at the residence before the error was uncovered, or if they had been relocated.
It does say that all residents at the dwelling have been tested and that Public Health has confirmed that there is no cause for concern or risk of community transmission.
The outcome of the tests carried out was not stated.
According to the press release, the traveller is due to complete their quarantine period today.
As of Thursday, the number of people in isolation, either at a government facility or in their homes, as required by the Medical Officer of Health, is 910.
