Squash players across the island are being encouraged to head to the South Sound Squash Club for two important events this October, all in aid of worthy causes.
The first is a fundraiser for popular squash advocate Derek Tyler, a former teacher at Cayman Prep and High School, who sadly was injured in a car accident. Funds raised will go towards the cost of his medical care.
“Mr. T, as he is fondly known, has been a staple and pillar of strength for the Squash Club and a superb advocate of the sport of squash,” Paolo Juarez, South Sound Squash Club Board member said. “In honour of World Squash Day, which happens on Saturday 12th October, and in support of Mr. T, the SSSC will host October's Club Night on that day from 5pm until 8pm.”
Squash games will be organised for the evening at a cost of CI$20.00 per participant. Nibbles will also be included. All proceeds will be going to the family for assistance to cover medical expenses.
Paola said that the SSSC is asking for those unable to join on the 12th October to consider making a donation/contribution to the family, which they can do by contacting the club to get the Butterfield account details.
She confirmed: “We would love to see the entire community join-in. All levels of players are welcome to play: young, old and in-between!”
The second event takes place on 29th October. In support of Breast Cancer Awareness, this month's Squash & Wine will be hosted in its honour. This will be a 6:30pm start and tickets will cost CI$15 which will include a drink per person. The Club is asking ladies to wear pink that evening, gather girlfriends, get in court, play some squash and together, "squash cancer", Paolo said.
The game of squash is one of the world’s top ten healthiest sport, according to Forbes magazine and World Squash Day is a world-wide campaign with ambitious plans to attract one million new players to the game over the next decade. The South Sound Squash Club is Cayman’s premier facility with 24/7 key access and seven air-conditioned courts. It has hosted international events including the 2018 Pan American Squash Championship qualifiers and the Women's World Open in 2012 and currently has around 300 members who play regularly. They have a number of different programmes, including adult beginner squash, a junior programme, Doubles Drop In, Corporate League, Boxed League, Ladies Squash and Wine, Squash Fit Classes and themed club nights. Various tournaments for adults and juniors are held throughout the year.
