St Vincent’s La Soufriere volcano erupted on Friday morning sending huge ash plumes thousands of feet into the air.
The volcano, which last erupted in 1979, had been showing signs of increased activity over the past several months.
The government raised the alert level to Red this week and started evacuating residents from villages in close proximity to the erupting volcano on Thursday.
Hundreds of people could be seen fleeing the area by various modes of transportation.
La Soufriere is located in the northern part of St Vincent in the southern Windward Islands.
Several neighbouring islands have offered to house evacuating residents of St Vincent on condition that they are quarantined upon arrival, are vaccinated or otherwise tested to be proven free of COVID-19.
Cruiseship companies are also coming to the aid of the island with ships being sent to evacuate people off the island.
The Seismic Research Unit of the University of the West Indies which has been closely monitoring the volcano, reported the eruption on Friday morning.
“As of 8:41 am this morning April 9, 2021 an explosive eruption began at the La Soufrière volcano in St. Vincent. This is a culmination of the seismic activity that began on April 8. The eruption is ongoing and more information will be shared as things progress.”
St Vincent has a population of over 110,500.
