STAYING HEALTHY THROUGH THE SEASON

Christmas is notoriously a time to indulge, but make every effort to ensure you do not use this as the green light to over-indulge. Make sure you enjoy what you eat but keep an eye on life after the season. More specifically you want to keep a keen eye on your waistline. Remember the old adage, “easy to come on, hard to come off.” Here are some pointers to assist you.

DO NOT SIT ALL DAY - Get moving. Every Christmas special under the sun will be showing. But do not get yourself planked to the television. Take a 20 minute walk, especially after dinner to aid digestion. While you are it take along any gifts like the bicycle, Frisbee, scooter or soccer balls. The more you move the healthier you become.

AVOID THE CHRISTMAS STUFFING - Do not over stuff yourself. A recent study showed that we consume 3,000 calories in our Christmas dinner, which is way above the recommended value. This huge feast contributes to weight gain, indigestion and heartburn.

ENGAGE YOUR BRAIN - Do not sit around the television all the time. Keep your mind active by playing Trivial Pursuit or charades or any other game with family that will call your brain into action.

BE A CAREFUL COOK - Studies have shown that Christmas time is when a great deal of food poisoning occurs. So, the rule of thumb is do not leave food out all day. Put out small amounts at a time. What is on the table should just be out of the fridge or just finished cooking. Left overs should be used within 48 hours or just freeze them.

EAT FRUIT - Honestly speaking the average person at Christmas eats no more fruits than the satsuma in the stocking. Ensure that you get your recommended daily value of fruits and veggies.

Enjoy the season but be mindful of your health.
