Savannah Primary School recently changed its name to the Joanna Clarke Primary School in honor of its former head teacher, who dedicated her life to helping Cayman’s children be the very best they could be. Without a doubt she would have been proud to see the three school houses, each named after Cayman birds, Swallows (in red) Man of War (in blue) and Nightingale (in bright green) all ready to compete against each other, in the inter-house sports day.
Today’s Principal, Mr. Delton Pedley, said, “I want to highlight the Importance of a day like today when children showcase their talents as they continue to grow and develop. It’s not just about the running and the jumping, there is so much more that goes into a day like today: Following the instructions, following the rules, looking after one another, being safe, staying in the areas you should stay. These are the things, and many other things besides, that make today great.” Mr. Pedley also spoke about the tremendous support from parents, without which, he said, big school events like sports day would not be able to be such a big success. “We always rely on parents for their support and help and it is always there,” he said, “‘The best always,’ that is our motto. Have a good day everybody,” he said.
Tammy Hopkins, Acting Director of Education said, “It gives me great honor to bring greetings to you on behalf of the Department of Education Services. Today is all about you. All about you, the athletes, we celebrate your strengths, as we celebrate your victories, and every point counts. Always do your best, and just give it your best as you come around to the finish line. I want to wish you a day of true sportsmanship, and stiff competition. Be safe but most of all, have fun, OK? On behalf of the Minister, Hon Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, I now declare Joanna Clarke Primary School Sports Day open. Let the races begin.”
House Captains Matthew Gayle, Alyssa Burton, Sesiom Burton, and Mikayla Thames recited the Sports Pledge: “We promise that we will participate in the Joanna Clarke Inter House Primary School, respecting the regulations which govern the events, and the desire to participate with enthusiasm and integrity, in the true spirit of sportsmanship for the honor of our school and for the glory of sports.”
The very first thing was the cheerleaders’ competition, which Man of War won.
The races began with the Year 2 Boys’ 50, followed by Division 1 80 meters races for boys and for girls, and then came the Division 2 100m for boys and for girls. Everyone in the grandstand cheered their teams, as the children run up to the finish line. Later came 150m races for Division 2, and some 200m races for the boys and girls of Division 3. After lunch came the 4x100 meter relays, for boys and girls.
It was a tough battle, but Swallows won, with 608 points, Man Of War came second with 521 points and Nightingale came third with 414 points. Lets see if the Joanna Clarke Primary can bring the inter primary schools trophy home, on March 17.
