“It is going to be a tremendous thing for Cayman Brac. The Alexander will be opening its doors officially next month.”
That announcement signals the long-awaited reopening of Cayman Brac’s ‘The Alexander Hotel’ in February and brings to an end a six-year hiatus since the property was closed in 2014.
The Alexander Hotel has been a fixture in Cayman Brac - and the Cayman Islands - tourism sector since 2009.
Since the 2014 closing, the owners - father and son team Cleveland and Nelson Dilbert - undertook a comprehensive review of their investment and eventually decided on the best business model for the property’s future development and sustainability, while maintaining its unique brand.
“We are pleased to announce there will be a hosting capacity of 60 guests in 30 rooms each with kitchenettes,” they’ve announced.
“It has a variety room types available, including two-bedroom suites. The bar and restaurant would also be coming on stream soon with some surprises to look forward to.”
Reservations are being set up via online booking services such as Airbnb, Vrbo, Homeaway, Expedia and The Alexander’s official site www.Alexanderhotelcayman.com.
“Already, we know that the next few months would be busy with some large groups already booking for functions and group getaways. Two staff will initially run the day to day operations, maintenance, and guest services,” the Dilberts report.
The property passed the government’s pre-opening inspection with flying colours.
“All government inspectors were professional and detailed and we are pleased to have had an ‘excellent’ rating,” they said adding that, “We look forward to welcoming our first guests.”
“Already, we know that the next few months would be busy with some large groups already booking for functions and group getaways.”
Two staff will initially run the day to day operations, maintenance, and guest services.
District Commissioner, Ernie Scott, is pleased to see The Alexander back in business:
“The reopening of the Alexander hotel will breathe new hope back into our tourism industry, and the local economy. Their new business strategy will allow for more flexibility in respect of bookings. It will also provide guests with the opportunity to experience the services available to both residents and visitors alike.”
Many residents recalled the wonderful services they experienced in the past and look forward to an even more impressive restart. Local groceries, car rental companies, souvenir shops and restaurants are beaming with anticipation.
John Lynch (regular visitor and now property owner) are excited: “My wife and I have been coming here for the last 7 years. We are excited about this, as we often enjoyed the ambience and delicious meals that were served in the past. It’s a great idea to have an additional facility on the island. It will surely bring a boost to the local economy and tourism industries. We wish them all success.”
And as one resident put it: “This is much needed for the community, especially at high season time. It will boost the inflow of tourists, as there will be an increase of room availability. I am expecting Cayman Airways to play a vital role in the travelling aspects.
"There will be a boost in hospitality, as well as, car rentals, restaurants and grocery sales. It will also, in the long run, create employment. Tourists now have a choice and the bread and breakfast approach is welcomed.
