These are challenging times for Cayman and just about every other country around the world. No matter the geographical, economic, population size or choice of political system, the scourge of the COVID-19 pandemic has set undeniable parallels on the global impact.
But in spite of the commonality of the impact of the pandemic, we are now seeing a divergence of approaches in how it’s being dealt with.
A year and a half after COVID-19 struck the world, the scramble to return to some semblance of economic normality while safeguarding public health has opened up a flood of debate - some quite heated with stridently entrenched opinions - that are causing serious rifts in societies, Cayman included.
These are very complex issues that put individual rights against the wider good of the community.
It’s a very tough balancing act.
Governments, businesses, communities and individuals all have a vested interest.
We are witnessing too many instances where the discourse is descending into emotionally-driven arguments, defensive politics, policies based more on panic than serious analysis, and waves of misinformation - oftentimes due to a misunderstanding of complex health science data).
Thankfully, amidst all that, there is serious debate no less passionate but focused on addressing the issues that Cayman and the world are now confronted with and will be going forward.
COVID-19 doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon.
Against that background, and with the challenges and uncertainties of the future staring us in the face, Caymanian Times has brought together a panel of well-informed, respected, articulate, analysts and community leaders to address these issues that we must deal with.
