This day in time: Cayman Drama Society first performed

In July, 1970, the Cayman Drama Society was finally formed as an informal group and they prepared for their first production called ‘See How They Run’. It ran for three nights from 12 - 14 November 1970. It was the first full play ever presented in Cayman with scenery, costumes and props. The George Town Town Hall (now Constitution Hall) was bursting at the seams every night. It was really a joyful occasion for everyone and most rewarding for the fledgling Society. An extra performance was presented on 21 November 1970 to meet public demand.

The CDS benefited greatly from having a home for its productions, when the Prospect Playhouse opened in Red Bay in October 1990, with a gala evening of speeches and refreshments, and the first production, Pirate Princess commenced the following week.

In 2011 the Playhouse underwent extensive enhancements, including the building of a hurricane-proof window to its theatre office, re-flooring of the office and redecoration of public spaces. In 2012 it saw an upgrade of the auditorium and stage sound systems.

The CDS has produced some memorable productions over the years, none more so anticipated than its Playhouse Family Christmas, a regular Christmas tradition for many which began in 2014. Other notable performances include Grease, Anne of Green Gables, Peter Pan The Musical, Death of a Salesman, The Importance of being Earnest, the Woman in Black, as well as some brilliant Shakespeare productions, including The Tempest and A Midsummer’s Night Dream. Due to Covid restrictions, the CDS’ last performance to date was Noises Off in May of this year.
