Pedro St James is a popular spot for visitors to the Islands and it is often called ‘The Birthplace of Democracy’ in the Cayman Islands. This is because the first meeting to discuss the possibility of developing a local parliament took place on 5 December 1831 at this very location, a great house with huge historical significance for the Cayman Islands, located in Savannah. The house represents the seat of parliamentary beginnings in the Cayman Islands and has therefore earned its place in the history books of the country.
