Tropical Storm Iota expected to become a major Hurricane

Tropical Storm Iota formed in the central Caribbean Sea yesterday, marking the 30th named storm in a record-breaking hurricane season. Iota is forecast to turn into a hurricane tomorrow and become a major hurricane by Monday as it approaches the Nicaraguan coastline.

Central America is already reeling from Eta hitting Nicaragua as a Category 4 hurricane last week

According to the National Hurricane Center, there is a risk of dangerous wind, storm surge, and rainfall impacts across portions of Nicaragua and Honduras starting Monday.

Central America is facing a humanitarian crisis following Eta's deadly blow. Millions are enduring dangerous conditions in the storm's wake -- with concerns over waterborne diseases and COVID-19 complicating recovery. And the situation could become even more dire.

Here in the Cayman Islands moderate to fresh northeasterly winds and seas will continue across the Cayman area as Tropical Storm Iota strengthens southeast of Jamaica, which is moving west to southwest today. Skies will be partly cloudy with a 30% chance of showers.

Winds will be East to Northeasterly at 10 to 15 knots at daytime, 15 to 20 knots by evening and seas will be moderate to rough with wave heights of 4 to 6 feet.

Small craft should exercise caution over the open waters from late tonight.
