The University College of the Cayman Islands has been awarded status as a chapter of the international scholars’ honor society, Phi Beta Delta. This recognition highlights UCCI’s commitment to excellence in international education and research, providing new opportunities for students and faculty to engage on a global academic stage.

Founded in 1986 at California State University, Long Beach, Phi Beta Delta is the world’s first honor society dedicated to acknowledging scholarly achievement in international education. With more than 200 chapters across the globe, it unites students, scholars, and faculty engaged in international study, research, and collaboration. By joining this prestigious network, UCCI reinforces its role as a leader in higher education and global scholarship in the Caribbean region.

The meaning of PBD is: Phi (philomatheia) - love of knowledge; Beta (biotremmonia) - valuing of human life; and Delta (diapheren) - achieving excellence. Members benefit from an array of resources, including publishing opportunities, international conferences, and scholarships that support high-quality, multidisciplinary research.

As a long-standing member of Phi Beta Delta, Dr Robert Robertson, President and CEO of UCCI commented, “This recognition as a chapter of Phi Beta Delta is a transformative step for UCCI. It highlights our commitment to international scholarship and will provide immense value to both students and faculty. Membership will enable our academic community to build meaningful global connections and access unparalleled opportunities for professional development.”

Dr. Geneve Phillip-Durham, Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences and the sponsor for the UCCI chapter, echoed this sentiment. “We are thrilled to bring such a prestigious platform to UCCI. Our chapter will actively participate in Phi Beta Delta’s publishing opportunities, student scholarship awards, and interdisciplinary conferences. These resources will elevate academic research and provide students and faculty with tools to address local and global challenges. This achievement is not just a win for UCCI, but for the Cayman Islands’ community.”.

This achievement reflects UCCI’s dedication to excellence in higher education and its mission to prepare students to thrive in a globalized world. By joining Phi Beta Delta, UCCI strengthens its position as an institution that values scholarship, international engagement, and academic excellence.
