On Monday 30 January 2023, Dr. Robert W. Robertson, President, and CEO of the University College of the Cayman Islands, signed a memorandum of understanding with Dr. Greg Keefe, interim President, and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), in Canada, to affirm a new partnership which will provide global opportunities for the two university communities.
Present at the virtual signing were Her Excellency, Emina Tudakovic – Canadian High Commissioner and Consul General for the Cayman Islands, Dr. Robert W. Robertson, President, and CEO of UCCI and Dr. Greg Keefe, interim President, and Vice-Chancellor of UPEI, alongside staff and faculty from both organizations.
UCCI’s partnerships with other universities and organizations open global opportunities for faculty, students, and staff. These worldwide collaborations increase the quality of UCCI’s teaching and learning, research, and innovation amongst many further benefits. These include exchange programs for staff and students, joint seminars, lectures and meetings, joint research projects, program collaborations and much more.
Located in Charlottetown, the capital city of Prince Edward Island, the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) has a rich history with roots in two founding institutions, Prince of Wales College (est. 1834) and Saint Dunstan’s University (est. 1855). UPEI’s nine faculties (arts; business; education; Indigenous knowledge, education, research, and applied studies; nursing; science; business; sustainable design engineering; and veterinary medicine) and two schools (mathematical and computational sciences and climate change and adaptation) offer a wide range of programs and degrees to approximately 5,500 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students.
Dr. Robert W. Robertson, President, and CEO of UCCI, commented, “We are thrilled to partner with the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) to open the doors for our University community to enjoy worldwide partnerships, opportunities and training. At UCCI we are extremely proud of our staff, faculty and students and want to provide an opportunity for them to grow and thrive with international influences, partners, and mentors. This new venture will not only put us in touch with some of the world’s leading educators but it will also set our students up for future global careers, whilst keeping us at the forefront of international research.
“We are absolutely delighted to be working with the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) and look forward to announcing the first initiative.”
Dr. Greg Keefe, interim President, and Vice-Chancellor of UPEI, commented, “Students at UPEI come from all walks of life and from local, regional, national, and international locations to study and learn at UPEI. In the fall of 2022, international students from 96 countries comprised almost 32 per cent of the University’s total enrolment of students.
“In addition to study opportunities, we currently partner with universities all over the world for development and research opportunities. While we already have a relationship with UCCI through our Faculty of Nursing, we believe that we can expand upon this through the signing of this memorandum of understanding.
“Working with our excellent colleagues at UCCI, we believe that we can create linkages that will provide global benefits to the Prince Edward Island and Cayman Islands communities, for many years to come.”
The virtual signing of the memorandum of understanding took place at 11:30am on Monday 30 January.
