The Cayman Islands Regional Mission Council, of the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, hosted a Service of Prayer for the Candidates in the 2025 General Election. Held at the historic Elmslie Memorial Church in George Town, under the leadership of the Chair of Council, Rev Rohan Forrester, this solemn yet celebratory service brought together worshippers, community leaders, and political candidates in an atmosphere of unity and reflection.

The sanctuary resonated with the voices of the congregation, led by gifted and energetic musicians and choir. Expressions of worship echoed throughout the church, fostering an environment of hope and collective devotion. A total of 43 out of 58 candidates seeking office attended the service, demonstrating their commitment to seeking divine guidance in their leadership journey. One additional candidate sent apologies for their absence.  While 18 of the 19 constituencies were fully or partially represented, seven constituencies had all their candidates present, a reflection of the unifying spirit of the occasion.

The Cayman Ministers’ Association, led by Chairman Rev. Torrence Bobb were in attendance. Pastor Dr. Andrew Ebanks led the congregation in fervent prayers for the nation and its leaders.

In the sermon delivered by Pastor Ormond Williams, he challenged the candidates to view their leadership through the lens of identity and purpose. Emphasizing that their call to serve is not merely a personal or political decision but a divine engagement. Pastor Williams urged them to embrace leadership as a sacred mission, which is a blessing that carries significant responsibility. Citing Micah 6:8, he called on all in positions of authority to “act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.” He encouraged those present to let justice and compassion guide their actions and to approach their roles with humility and grace.

Worshippers expressed their joy and appreciation, describing it as a short yet powerful experience where love and unity were deeply felt. Some remarked on the tangible presence of God in their midst, calling it a wonderful service where heaven seemed to touch earth and glory filled the sanctuary.

The significance of the service was perhaps best captured by the words of the candidates. One reflected, “I haven’t been to church very often for a while, but this service makes me feel like I want to go back.” Another candidate shared, “Such a special service. It was timely, and I pray that every candidate will consider Micah 6:8 as the pastor encouraged.” Generally, the feedback from the others was that the service was “uplifting and encouraging.”

Rev Donovan Myers Deputy General Secretary of the United Church Council in Cayman, expressed the hope that as election season unfolds, the campaigns will offer voters thoughtful ideas that reflect vision, honesty, and a deep love for these islands.  He offered the commitment of the Church to continually pray for the candidates,  indicating that “Our doors and hearts remain open as partners in the pursuit of justice, peace, and the flourishing of these beloved Cayman Islands.”
