A 42-year-old-woman of West Bay has been arrested by the police on Saturday 13 January, following reports of obtaining property by deception.
It was reported that a rental ad was placed on a local advertising website stating that a residential property was for rent in the Prospect area of George Town. The complainant stated that they contacted the seller and that payments were made to secure the property, after which they were no longer able to contact the seller. They also stated that following this happening they found that the property had been relisted for rent on the local website, which led them to believe that they had been scammed.
The police are currently investigating this matter and believe that there may have been others who have fallen victim to this rental scam and are encouraging them to report the matter to the police.
Additionally, the public is being encouraged not to exchange any moneys regarding rental properties without first verifying that it is a legitimate advertisement, through viewing and other traceable means. Anyone with information regarding this and other financial scams are encouraged to call the George Town Police Station at 949-4222.
