100% Completion Rate in Child Safeguarding Training

The Ministry of Education (MoE) is proud to announce that all 52 schools and early childhood institutions in the Cayman Islands have received its mandatory Child Safeguarding Training. This initiative ensures that over 2,500 persons are better equipped to protect the well-being of approximately 11,000 students, fostering a safer learning environment.

“Investing in the safety and well-being of our children is paramount. By equipping those working and volunteering within schools and centres with the knowledge and skills to identify and respond to potential child abuse, we are creating a stronger safety net for our future generation,” stated the Honourable Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, Premier and Minister for Education.

The Child Safeguarding Training programme, launched in 2021, has two components. The online module equips participants with foundational knowledge of MoE’s child protection policies, local legislation, and identifying signs of abuse. The in-person module further develops practical skills for responding to disclosures and suspicions. Both modules require completion every three years to ensure staff remain current on safeguarding procedures.

“This training allowed me to better understand the different types of abuse children undergo whilst providing ways how I can identify same and get the students needed help,” commented one programme participant. “It was good to know the statistics of where we live and teach.”

The MoE’s commitment extends beyond schools. Training has already been completed in a few post-secondary educational institutions, NGOs, libraries, and a health clinic, and discussions are underway to offer the programme to churches and other community organisations who have expressed an interest.
