Twenty years ago, in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan, a group of extraordinary individuals stepped forward. With homes destroyed, streets flooded, and uncertainty in the air, these volunteers became the backbone of the Cayman Islands Red Cross (CIRC). They assessed damage, provided first aid, managed shelters, and offered comfort to those who had lost everything. Their dedication became the foundation of what would later be known as “The Henris” — an award ceremony created in their honor.
That legacy of service continues today. Recently, the Cayman Islands Red Cross hosted its Annual Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony at the Marriott Hotel, recognizing the incredible contributions of its volunteers throughout 2024. It was an evening of gratitude, reflection, and celebration, as the CIRC honored the individuals who dedicate their time and energy to keeping the Cayman Islands safe.
Seven Emergencies, Three Storms, and a Community That Came Together
The 2024 hurricane season was one of the most active in recent years. Three named storms — Helene, Beryl, and Rafael — swept across the islands, bringing destructive winds and heavy rains. On top of that, two severe floods and two house fires forced residents to evacuate their homes. Each time, the Red Cross was there.
CIRC opened its shelters seven times this year, providing evacuees with a safe place to stay, warm meals, and emotional support. In addition, volunteers worked alongside Hazard Management Cayman Islands (HMCI) and the Cayman Islands Regiment to distribute relief supplies, fill sandbags, and transport seniors to safety.
It was a relentless year — but one that proved, once again, that when disaster strikes, Cayman’s Red Cross volunteers are always ready.
The evening’s Guest of Honor, Chief Officer of the Portfolio of the Civil Service Mrs. Gloria McField-Nixon, commended the volunteers for their dedication, emphasizing the profound impact they have on the lives of those in need.
“In times of uncertainty, your work provides a beacon of hope. Whether responding to storms, supporting displaced families, or ensuring the most vulnerable among us are cared for, your commitment strengthens the fabric of our community. The Cayman Islands is a safer, stronger, and more resilient place because of you.”
CIRC Director Jondo Obi echoed these sentiments and praised the volunteers for their selflessness: “In a year filled with challenges and opportunities, your unwavering commitment has once again been the backbone of the Cayman Islands Red Cross. This year was exceptionally busy, with our shelter opening seven times in response to emergencies and three named storms impacting our islands. Beyond our own operations, many of you answered the call to serve in government shelters across the Cayman Islands, ensuring that no one was left without support in their time of need. Your dedication in times of crisis embodies the true spirit of the Red Cross, and your actions consistently demonstrate the strength of humanity at its best.”
Brandon Campbell: The Volunteer Who Never Stops Moving
Among this year’s honorees was Brandon Campbell, named Volunteer of the Year 2024 for his extraordinary commitment to service. Throughout 2024, Brandon proved time and again that he was willing to step up whenever and wherever he was needed.
During the hurricane season, he was on the frontlines, ensuring shelters were prepared, sandbags were filled, and seniors were safely transported to higher ground. When severe floods displaced families, Brandon was there, assisting with evacuations and delivering critical supplies. He also played a key role in supporting Cuban migrants, offering aid and logistical support during their arrival.
What truly sets Brandon apart is not just his work ethic, but the spirit he brings to every task. With his infectious humor and boundless enthusiasm, he lifts the morale of everyone around him. Whether he’s coordinating emergency response efforts or helping at a community event, Brandon makes sure that even the hardest work is done with a sense of camaraderie and joy. His unwavering commitment to service and his ability to inspire those around him have earned him the most prestigious honor of all — Volunteer of the Year for 2024.
A Year of Action: First Aid, Seniors, and the Power of Preparedness
CIRC volunteers don’t just respond to disasters — they prepare for them, ensuring the community is always ready.
First Aid Training Manager Peter Hughes highlighted how Red Cross volunteers provided first aid coverage at over 60 community events, giving thousands of people peace of mind. Meanwhile, more than 1,300 individuals were trained in lifesaving skills, including 12 new instructors in Cayman’s schools as part of the RISE initiative.
But disaster preparedness isn’t just about storms and injuries — it’s also about taking care of the most vulnerable. The “Support Our Seniors” program made sure that elderly residents weren’t left behind. 92 volunteers completed 655 trips, helping seniors get to medical appointments, buy groceries, and participate in community activities. Thanks to a generous donation from Trac Automotive, the program now has a brand-new Changan SUV, allowing them to assist even more seniors in need.
More Than a Thrift Shop — A Lifeline for Families in Need
For many in Cayman, the CIRC Thrift Shop is more than just a place to find affordable clothing and household items — it’s a safety net. 141 families received emergency assistance through the Thrift Shop Referral Program this year, ensuring they had access to essentials like clothing and furniture after experiencing financial hardship.
Thrift Shop and Community Outreach Manager Eddie Sepp Tinling-Miller put it simply: “Every piece of clothing, every item of furniture—it’s not just a donation. It’s a second chance for a family to rebuild.”
A Night to Remember, A Future to Look Forward To
As the evening started, CIRC Chairman Doug Moffatt reminded the audience of why they do this work:
“Volunteering is a special kind of giving — it demands time, heart, and unwavering dedication. Each of you has chosen to share these gifts, and in doing so, you create ripples of kindness and hope that extend far beyond what can be measured.”
With 2025 on the horizon, the Cayman Islands Red Cross remains committed to building a stronger, safer, and more resilient community. The work is never done—but with volunteers like these, the future is in good hands.
