The Association for the Advancement of Cruise Tourism (ACT) welcomes today’s decision in Parliament, where the motion was passed to hold a referendum on cruise berthing alongside the general election next year. ACT is encouraged by the support for the motion in Parliament and the opportunity it gives Caymanians to decide on the future of this vital industry.
ACT Spokesperson Ellio Solomon expressed his gratitude for the support shown by the members of the public outside the House of Parliament today.
“ACT was very pleased with the wonderful show of support today, with such a vibrant turnout despite the short notice. We also note and welcome the lack of any opposition to the call for a Yes vote to the referendum, and we remain hopeful that this is a positive sign of things to come. The country is hurting, and we need unity in the community.” Mr. Solomon said.
ACT also observed the debate in Parliament and was pleased to see broad bipartisan support. Every Member present voted in favor of the referendum, and ACT sees this as a strong signal of the importance of giving Caymanians a voice in this decision.
“Setting aside politics, it’s encouraging to see both Government and the Opposition align on this issue. ACT will continue its campaign and remain hopeful for the same outcome when the voters have their say. We are optimistic that an overwhelming “Yes in favour” vote will help secure the future of the cruise tourism industry, which is so vital to our economy.”
ACT remains committed to educating the public on the value of cruise tourism and looks forward to participating in the national conversation leading up to the referendum.
