Kim Wallace and Denise Powers

Authentic You Retreats, a quarterly event held by Free Spirit Connections raised $425 for Project Further, an initiative to raise $1 million for the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre to build a new purpose-built safe shelter for survivors of domestic violence.

Denise Powers, founder of Project Further, has committed to thru-hiking the 2,650 mile Pacific Crest Trail from March – September 2022 to raise both the necessary funds and public awareness of the blight domestic violence and gender-based inequities creates for our communities.

Kim Wallace, founder of Free Spirit Connections and Authentic You Retreats said this: “the donation reflects not only a portion of the proceeds from the retreat but also a personal matched donation because I believe this is such a worthy and needed goal for our community. I’m happy to be part of the solution that supports any person needing help to navigate the unfortunate trauma of domestic violence. We can all do our part to make a difference.”

Denise Powers thanked Ms Wallace for making Project Further and the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre her selected beneficiary. “The statistics tell us that approximately one in three women experiences violence by an intimate partner during their lifetimes. That means you know someone who has lived through it. The Cayman Islands Crisis Centre provides the vital service of safe shelter to those people who are in danger from physical and emotional abuse from their partners. Let’s help them help these people lead lives free from intimidation and violence.”

The funds were generated from the 5th Authentic You Retreat, held October 21 – 24, 2021 at The Cottages, East End, where fifteen women and men journeyed together in self-discovery, collectively learning from each other. The next retreat is scheduled for February 17 – 20, 2022. For more information email authenticyouretreats@gmail.com.

Ms Powers will start hiking the Pacific Crest Trail at the California-Mexico border, near Campo, California on March 6, 2022, and will hike through the backcountry of the Californian desert, the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Cascade mountain ranges of Oregon and Washington, culminating at the Canadian border sometime in September 2022.
