Award winning movie ‘Ivan’ premieres in September

The Cayman Islands premiere of the award-winning short film ‘Ivan’ is taking place on 13th September at Camana Bay, and the event will be a full-blown red carpet celebration of this remarkable film. The date of the first screening of the movie is particularly poignant, as it is inspired by Hurricane Ivan, which hit Grand Cayman almost exactly 20 years ago.

The evening will showcase a behind the scenes look of the film and a Q&A with the star, Sasha Lane and writer and director, Caymanian filmmaker Jazz Pitcairn. The red carpet and celebrations will begin at 6:00pm and run until 10:00pm and will take place at Abacus, Camana Bay. Guests will have an opportunity to celebrate the premiere in style with the writer/director, stars, and producers. There will be two screenings of the movie – one at 7:00pm and one at 8:00pm at the Camana Bay Cinema.

Ms Pitcairn said Ivan has been a deeply personal project inspired by the life-changing events of Hurricane Ivan in 2004, exploring themes of resilience, community, and survival.

“This film is a tribute to the resilience of the Caymanian people. Ivan is not just a story about survival; it’s a celebration of our community, our strength, and our spirit. It’s incredibly meaningful to bring this story home, where it all began,” she confirmed.

Ivan has already had a successful international run, including acceptance into several Oscar-qualifying film festivals, so Ms Pitcairn is delighted the film is now coming home to Cayman for this meaningful premiere.

“I’m immensely proud of what we’ve accomplished with Ivan. From the script to the screen, every moment has been a labour of love, and seeing the film resonate with audiences, especially here in Cayman, is a dream come true,” she said. “Ivan has been accepted into several Oscar-qualifying film festivals, which is a huge honour. It’s a testament to the power of storytelling and the universal themes that this film touches on. I’m thrilled to see a story rooted in Cayman connecting with audiences worldwide.”

Ms Pitcairn’s past work includes HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show, and Apple TV+’s Dickinson, while the film’s star Sasha Lane has been in Universal’s Twisters, Disney’s Loki, and in the Cannes Film Festival’s jury prize winner American Honey. Producer Nikkia Moulterie’s movies include HBO’s Random Acts of Flyness, and Sundance Film Festival’s grand jury prize winner, Nanny.

Ms Pitcairn believes this interactive session will offer insights into the creative process, the impact of the film, and the journey from script to screen. With 35 Caymanian talents involved in the production, Ivan is not just a film but a showcase of the island’s creative abilities, she believed. The premiere promises to be a memorable evening for all who attend.

“Sharing Ivan with a Caymanian audience is the most important part of this journey for me,” she stated. “This film is a reflection of our experiences, our struggles, and our triumphs, and I hope it resonates deeply with everyone who sees it.”
