WHAT is Mas Azúcar

Azúcar is Spanish for sugar. Mas Azúcar is a Latin Carnival band experience coming to Cayman’s National Carnival, Batabano on May 4th 2019. Mas Azúcar will provide an explosion of energy from the sweet sounds of salsa, reggaeton and merengue.

With music on the Carnival road being predominantly soca inspired, Mas Azúcar will mainly attract the latin community in Cayman; those who want to listen to a little more Spanish music with a hint of soca.

WHAT is the Inspiration behind the brand?

Cabaret Tropicana is a world famous show in Havana, Cuba. The show takes place in a lush, tropical garden. Visitors from all over the world attend to witness the distinctive costume displays and flawlessly choreographed dances. The guests are able to enjoy the show whilst surrounded by nature and the local cuisine. The energy from the dancers, the passion for art and entertainment and the beauty of the surroundings is what Mas Azúcar aims to provide in all upcoming endeavours.

The Mission

Mas Azúcar ‘s vision is to create authentic cultural experiences for all to enjoy. Mas Azúcar plans to do this by keeping the elements inspired by Tropicana at the forefront: high energy performances, artistic expressions (through wardrobe or other handmade arts) and natural surroundings of our island. This will ensure to indulge all senses.

WHO will be involved?

Cayman’s key tourism attribute is its friendly and diverse set of people. Mas Azúcar aims to partner with people who are interested in the exposure of the different cultures located on island. Why a band in Batabano?

Batabano is a time for people of all different descents to gather with a common interest and celebrate community spirit. Carnival is all about unity and Mas Azúcar believes that uniting the “melting pot” of people on our shores is a sure way to feel connected and truly represented.

Behind the brand

The family behind Mas Azúcar believes in embracing their latin background and sharing it with others.

Naidelys Eden Henry, former Miss Cayman Tourism World and current Mompreneur has done it all when it comes to carnival. From entertaining the masses in unique cultural pieces, to coordinating extravagant events, she is well equipped in bringing authentic experiences to any initiative she’s a part of. Her vision will surely create a lasting impression for the community and the audience witnessing the show.

Shemila Eden, Marketing Director of Mas Azúcar and Cayman’s Visual Media Company, Trifecta Films, is unquestionably passionate about her upbringing and mixed cultures. Her vision towards the genuine exposure and development of Cayman’s diverse community, combined with her marketing expertise will ensure to leave a powerful impact for many years to come.

Costumes

The theme of Mas Azúcar’s costumes is closely aligned with the brand’s Cabaret Tropicana inspiration. The use of ruffles, sleeves and feather headpieces are all commonly worn by dancers in the world famous Tropicana shows. Mas Azúcar’s vision is to symbolize fluidity, elegance and confidence with a latin flair. This year’s costume section is called, Zafiro, Spanish for Sapphire.

Jeweled over different shades of aqua to royal blue, Zafiro resembles the sparkling gleam of the Sapphire stone when touched by the sun. For both the Frontline and Backline, participants may choose to add on a headpiece to make a statement and/or a belt with a ruffle skirt for extra movement while they dance on the road with Mas Azúcar. This year’s costumes were designed by Muna Shadeed.

Mas Azúcar’s T-shirt package is also available for purchase. All packages include Mas Azúcar branded items such as the t-shirt or tank top, a bottle, bag, free entry to Mas Azúcar’s after parade events, discounts from participating vendors and more.

The band is hosting a Registration this Friday 5 April at Cayman Cabana from 4:30pm - 8:30pm. There will be giveaways for persons who enter to win a costume or t -shirt package. Admission is free and there are good food and drink specials.
