Back to School: School Supplies

It’s that time of year for parents to start buying school supplies. Having the necessary school supplies is important as they are needed for the everyday tasks that children do at school. Not having these supplies can hinder the child’s ability to do their best work. It can also cause disruption when he or she must keep borrowing a pencil or a sharpener from another student. Yes, teachers may keep extra class supplies, but it is a parent’s responsibility to provide the basic items.

Schools usually send out a list for the upcoming school year. Just in case you have misplaced it, below is a list of basic school supplies that every child, from primary to high school, should have.

• composition books (at least 5)

• 3/4 pencils (#2HB if possible) coloured pencils (12pk)

• glue stick

• paper folders with pockets (at least 2)

• eraser

• sharpener

• pencil case (to hold all the items)

• 12” ruler

• blue & black ink pens

Most of the stationery supplies stores in Grand Cayman carry all these supplies. Some of these stores are offering Back to School savings and discounts if you shop early.

And if you would like to donate school supplies to those in need, Caribbean Alliance Insurance is once again having its annual “Stuff the Bus” event which will benefit organisations such as the Department of Children and Family Services, the Needs Assessment Unit, the Crisis Centre, the Frances Bodden Girls Home and the Bonaventure Boys Home.

Donated supplies can be dropped off at donation boxes located at Foster’s Supermarket – Savannah, Cost-U-Less and Buy$mart or can be handed directly to event organisers and charity group representatives.
