Botanic Park hosts 5K Run/Walk in support of Children’s Garden

Ministry of Tourism signs on as main sponsor

The Tourism Attraction Board (TAB) and the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park (QEIIBP) invites the community to take part in the attraction’s first-ever fundraising 5K Run/Walk on Sunday 13th June.

The race taking place ahead of the Queen’s Birthday holiday, will move from the Park’s entrance, moving onto Botanic Park Road, south on Frank Sound Road to Clifton Hunter High School and back. Monies raised from the event will go toward the completion of the Children’s Garden project, which is still under development.

“This is our first time hosting a 5K and it is exciting to find new ways to raise funds and to have fun while doing it and for a first-time event, we anticipate having a really good turn out on race day,” said John Lawrus, General Manager for the Botanic Park.

“With the help of the Ministry of Tourism, and our other sponsors we feel supported. We hope to solidify the event and bring it back again next year with increased participation,” he added.

As the main sponsor of the event, the Ministry of Tourism hopes to boost more donations for the Children’s Garden project.

“The Botanic Park’s objective is to provide a space that our children can call their own; where they can play and enjoy the outdoors while learning about their island’s natural habitat and the animals that live within it. By all accounts it is not only a fantastic way to engage children through tangible learning, but it will also be a wonderful addition to the tourism market especially for the eastern districts,” said Hon. Kenneth Bryan, Minister for Tourism.

“I believe in leading by example and in doing so, the Ministry hopes to encourage more corporate donations which will assist in completing the new Children’s Garden,” added Minister Bryan.

“The $25 entry fee includes chip timing by Race Caribbean, refreshments, a prize ceremony and a t-shirt, although shirts are limited,” said Mr. Lawrus.

The race starts at 6:30 am with registration beginning at 6:00 am. Participants can sign up online at https://racecaribbean.net/event/botanic-park-5k/.

Following the event, participants are welcome to complimentary refreshments sponsored by Good Mood Food. Co; Cayman National Bank and Coca-Cola.

Medals will be presented for the best times in eight age categories ranging from U12 through 60+. And in celebration of the Queen’s Birthday holiday, a special trophy will be presented to the person with the best royal fascinator design.

“Participants can take photos and share their fancy, crazy or funny fascinator on the Botanic Park’s Facebook page using the hashtags #QEIIBPrunwalk or #QEIIBPFascinatorFun. The photo which gets the most ‘likes’ will win. It’s just a bit of added fun,” said Mona Meade, the event’s organiser and Marketing Coordinator for the TAB.

Additional parking is located at the Water Authority Compound on Botanic Road until 10am on race day.

Other participating sponsors for the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park 5K Run/Walk are Fidelity Bank, High Impact Media, Water Authority Cayman, KRyS Global, Logic, Big Fish Radio, R Craft House and Sportista.
