In the midst of political chaos of the past 10 months within the ruling Conservative Party and compounded by largely self-inflicted economic turbulence, Britain today peacefully - and democratically - has its third prime minister in a year.
Rishi Sunak, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer in the ill-fated government of ex-prime minister Boris Johnson has become the country’s third leader in a year and its fourth in three years.
He was chosen without contest after the two other candidates, former prime minister Boris Johnson - seeking a comeback - dropped out, along with the other challenger, former defence and international development minister Penny Mordaunt. She stepped back at the last minute today, allowing Mr Sunak to be appointed unchallenged.
Mr Sunak who is of Asian background has also made history by becoming the UK’s first non-white Prime Minister.
The former Chancellor inherits a budgetary and economic crisis caused by a failed mini-budget presented by his immediate predecessor Liz and Truss, which was in the process of being overhauled by the recently installed Chancellor Jeremy Hunt.
Miss Truss abruptly resigned last week.
