Capella Music Festival Returns for a Summer Show

Grammy Award Winner Michael Bolton is making his return to Cayman.

Wild World Reggae Star Maxi Priest returns for Capella.

British Pop Star Charli XCX will bring high energy pop to the Capella Stage in her first Cayman show.

Chart Topper Wyclef Jean, will light up the Capella Stage with hits like 911.

Capella Music Festival is returning for a summer show at the Festival Green at Camana Bay on Saturday, July 16, 2022. The festival will be returning for the first time since December 2017, with an extended full-day show providing attendees with an immersive day of music bringing together legendary artists across the music worlds of pop, pop-rock, and reggae.

This year’s lineup will feature for the first time in Cayman, British Pop star Charli XCX known for her catalogue of huge hits, faultless synchronised dancing, and seamless costume changes, Charli delivers a mesmerising celebration of all things pop, known for her most commercially successful number one hit with Icona Pop ‘I Love It’, ‘Boom Clap’ and ‘Doing It’ featuring Rita Ora. Charli is no stranger to performing at major music festivals across the world and always delivers a show of true unadulterated fun, currently touring Europe and North America on her ‘Crash’ Tour, Cayman will experience a taster at Capella.

From pop to pop-rock the show will see the return of multiple Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Michael Bolton to Cayman. Bolton who has sold more than 65 million records globally and continues to tour the world headlined the Cayman Islands Jazz Fest in 2008. Bolton’s music travels over the decades with his hits such as ‘How am I supposed to live without you’, ‘Soul Provider’ and ‘How can we be Lovers”. In recognition of his artistic achievements, Bolton has won two Grammys for Best Pop Male Vocal Performance, with four nominations, six American Music Awards, three Emmy Award nominations, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As a songwriter, he has earned more than 24 BMI & ASCAP Awards, including Songwriter of the Year and the Hitmakers Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Bolton is a true pop legend.

In good company three-time Grammy award winner and Golden Globe nominee, Wyclef Jean will be performing for the first time in Cayman on the Capella Stage. Wyclef Jean exploded onto the scene as a founding member of legendary hip hop band The Fugees, alongside Lauryn Hill and Pras Michael, and has created meaningful music with substance ever since. In 1996, the Fugees released their monumental album The Score, since then, Wyclef has released eight albums as a solo artist that have sold nearly nine million copies worldwide, while he also released the commercially successful singles ‘911’ featuring Mary J. Blige, ‘Sweetest Girl’ featuring Akon, Niia and Lil Wayne’, he featured on Destiny Child’s ‘No, No, No’, and the US Billboard Hot 100 number one single ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ by Shakira; and wrote and produced the single ‘Maria Maria’ by Santana. Wyclef is set to bring a high energy performance to the Capella Stage.

As a Caribbean curated festival, Capella will always have a strong focus on reggae music, a favourite of the Island and the world, the show will feature two great Legends of Reggae music; Maxi Priest one of the most successful reggae fusion acts of all time, he released his first major album was in 1988, along with his cover of Cat Stevens’ ‘Wild World’, establishing him as one of the top British reggae singers. He is one of only two British reggae acts, along with UB40 to have an American Billboard number one with ‘Close to You’ in 1990. Priest had joined UB40 on tour in 2007, culminating in sold-out shows at the National Exhibition Centre, and his 2014 album Easy to Love entered the Billboard Top Reggae Albums Chart at number two, Priest’s top hits include, ‘Close to you’, ‘Wild World’, ‘Just a Little Bit Longer’ and ‘Some Guys Have All the Luck’, which he continues to perform at festivals and shows worldwide.

The show would not be complete without the return of an original Capella star, none other than Mr. Beres Hammond, the Grammy-nominated reggae and lovers rock star who is loved across the globe, making hits since the late 70s, Hammond recorded five albums in the 1990s as well as several compilations, his first album of the new millennium was 2001’s ‘Music Is Life’, which featured an appearance by Wyclef Jean, and contributions from Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith and Flourgon. The album spawned several hits, including ‘They Gonna Talk’, ‘Rockaway’, and ‘Ain’t It Good To Know’. The 2004 release Love Has No Boundaries, had guest spots by Buju Banton and Big Youth. in 2008, he released the album ‘A Moment in Time’, on VP Records, which featured the single ‘I Feel Good’, in 2012, Hammond released the album ‘One Love, One Life’ which topped the Billboard Reggae Albums chart and was nominated for a Grammy Award. Bere’s has performed at multiple successful shows in Cayman over the years the last being in 2017 at the last Capella Music Festival.

Capella festival-goers will experience the main stage performances as well as an additional Supernova Sound Tent, which will mix the international performers with a massive lineup of local performers and DJs including DJ Craig, Impulzz Band, $ugadaddi, Rico Ronaldo, DJ Cardiac, Asya Band, Las Palmas, Georgie Duarte, DJ RKM, DJ Glenroy, Erica Assai, Beneil Miller, The Fabulous 68s, The Neverines, Selecta Renegade, DJ Mat Banx, Decades of Perfume, James Geary and International electronic DJ’s Crazibiza and the Cheesecake Boys.

For this re-energized installment of the Capella Music Festival, local organizers, Bold Entertainment have partnered with Monster Media to produce the show and the Dart Organization as venue partner; the event will take place on the Festival Green at Camana Bay.
