CARDAMOM

This is a spice with a slightly sweet, intense flavour that most people compare to mint. Its origin is India but is used worldwide in a vast majority of savoury recipes. The seeds, oil and extracts have been used for centuries and known to have many health benefits. Here are some reasons for its use:

LOWERS BLOOD PRESSURE - Its antioxidant properties are responsible for this. In fact, researchers believe that it can lower pressure due to its diuretic effects, which mean it can promote urination to reduce water build up in the body.

CANCER FIGHTING PROPERTIES - Studies in mice have shown that the cardamom powder can increase the activity of certain enzymes that fight cancer. The spice may also enhance the ability of natural killer cells to attack tumours.

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY - Antioxidants which are abundant in cardamom protect cells from damage and stops inflammation from occurring.

AIDS DIGESTION - It is used widely with other herbs to relieve discomfort, nausea and vomiting. The most researched aspect of cardamom is its shown ability to heal ulcers. Test tube research has also shown that it can protect against Helicobacter pylori, a bacteria linked to the development of most stomach issues.

IMPROVES BREATHING AND OXYGEN USE - When used in Aromatherapy, it can provide an invigorating odour that enhances your body’s ability to utilize oxygen during exercise. It has also been shown to relax the airways making breathing easier, therefore, it is beneficial for those who have asthma.

LIVER - Cardamom extract may decrease elevated liver enzymes, triglyceride and cholesterol levels. They may also prevent liver enlargement and liver weight which reduces the risk of fatty liver disease. Try adding it with cinnamon and ginger to make a refreshing tea.
