The Cayman Islands Coast Guard's Operation Rescue Coordination Centre has reported tonight, (Tuesday, 2 April) that efforts are ongoing to coordinate response to disabled cargo ship, SC Montana, a Liberia freighter vessel that is in Cayman’s waters.
All crew members on SC Montana are safe. The ship suffered engine failure and is drifting towards Little Cayman.
Acting Governor Franz Manderson and Premier Hon Juliana O’Connor-Connolly met earlier tonight with members of the Cayman Islands Coast Guard and representatives of Hazard Management Cayman Islands, Department of Environment and other key stakeholders to discuss mitigation steps.
Coast Guard requested the assistance of vessels in the area to render assistance, and two vessels, Aruna Cihan and LEFKES have responded. Additionally, a local tug is in route from Grand Cayman.
Crew members on SC Montana have informed the Cayman Islands Coast Guard that they have generator power and all mechanisms to slow their drift have been employed. The ship’s engines remain offline.
