CAYMAN BRAC 2020 YOUTH COOK-OFF

By Shakir Khan

On Saturday 22nd August the annual Youth Cook Off was held at the Layman E Scott Senior High School on Cayman Brac. This was the first time the event commenced on the Brac. As usual the preparations, as well, as the eventual dishes were of the highest standards. Mr. James Myles, Ag. Director of Youth Services and Ms. Gorganne Rankin, Deputy Director National Health Culinary Programme were present to witness the contest.

Participants demonstrated a great awareness of professionalism, style and dedication in their undertaking. Although there was not much residential support, the event was a success in respect of the goal of the programme.

There were 3 teams competing on that day. They were all from the Brac. The standard of the competition was very much elevated here on the Brac and nationally. Each team achieved great scores and winners would join those on Grand Cayman for the final. “The students now demonstrate a greater sense of readiness and determination to succeed at the Food and Nutrition Exams. I also extend sincere thanks to all our sponsors for the event. Their input played a major role in this success,” declared Mr. Myles.

Speaking directly to Caymanian Times Mrs Rankin said “As for me I believe it went well. The students were keen and eager to do their thing. Today’s participants demonstrated their willingness to show off their cooking skills. From preparations to final product they were awesome. My only downside is the lack of public presence and support. Last year’s winner again walked away victorious this year. We have acquired the services of Stefon, a chef at Cayman Brac Beach Resort is excited to be brought on board to provide them with training. On September 2nd, Grand Cayman’s cook off gets underway in East End. The winner would then travel to the Brac to participate on October 22nd. James and I started this programme a few years ago and we are proud of its achievements. The final is carded for February 17th, 2021.”

Special thanks were expressed to the sponsors:

Cayman Airways, Cayman National Bank, Home Gas Ltd., Ministry of Education, Cayman Cadbury Society, NYCP, Cayman First Insurance, and Cayman Islands Agricultural Society.
