Dr. Veerle Poupeye and Hon. Isaac Rankine mark the renewal of the National Museum’s lease with the traditional symbolic peppercorn lease: a coil of thatch rope.

In a momentous occasion commemorating the Cayman Islands National Museum’s 34th anniversary, the Honorable Isaac Rankine, Minister for Youth, Sports, Heritage, and Home Affairs, renewed the lease of the historic Old Courts Building to the Museum. The symbolic peppercorn lease was marked by the ceremonial exchange of a coil of thatch rope — a poignant tradition steeped in Caymanian heritage.

During his remarks, Minister Rankine reflected on the importance of the Museum and its historic home:

“The Cayman Islands National Museum, housed in this 19th-century structure, is a fitting tribute to our heritage, being the oldest standing public building in Cayman. As is tradition, I am honored to accept this coil of thatch rope as a symbol of the peppercorn lease, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to this partnership.”

The Minister also highlighted the personal significance of the moment:

“As the son of a seaman, I hold a deep appreciation for the thatch rope’s role in our history. Once a vital commodity for bartering, it symbolizes the resourcefulness and ingenuity of our forefathers. This lease renewal represents our ongoing dedication to preserving Cayman’s rich cultural heritage for generations to come.”

Dr. Veerle Poupeye, Museum Director, expressed gratitude for the Government’s continued support:

“I am very honoured to present you with this token of our peppercorn rental. It is an awesome responsibility for us to be the custodians of this important building and this museum. And we are very grateful for the support and offerings invested in use.”

The Old Courts Building, dating back to the 19th century, serves as an iconic cornerstone of the Cayman Islands’ history. The National Museum’s efforts to preserve and showcase the nation’s culture and traditions are amplified by the Government’s steadfast support.
