As part of the Cayman Islands Men’s and Women’s national teams’ preparation, CIFA has announced that the teams will be participating in several international friendly matches in Turkey and Puerto Rico.
“We have long recognised the importance of ensuring that our Senior Men’s Team plays against international teams as part of their preparation, and this upcoming trip to Turkey is one of the several investments that we are making as we prepare our Senior Men’s Team for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June of this year”, said CIFA President, Alfredo Whittaker.
The Cayman Islands Men’s National Team will play against FC Turan, a professional club from Kazakhstan on 23rd March and a second match against the Moldova Men’s National Team on 26th March. Both matches will take place in Antalya, Turkey and are approved by FIFA, CONCACAF and UEFA.
Mr. Whittaker said that this team has a good mix of younger U20 players as well as some older players as the Association plans to revamp its existing Senior Men’s Team going forward.
“You will said that several of the team members are from the U20 National Team that played recently in St Kitts & Nevis, and that is part of our long-term plan to revamp the existing Men’s Team. The aim is to strike a good balance between the younger and older players with the more experienced players serving as mentors going forward”, he added.
The Men’s National Team is currently scheduled to play 2 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches in June of 2024 against Antigua & Barbuda and Cuba as well as further 2 matches in June of 2025 against Honduras and Bermuda.
The Cayman Islands Women’s Senior Team is also travelling to Puerto Rico to play matches against the Puerto Rican National Team on the 3rd and 6th of April and Mr. Whittaker said this is also part of a fresh start for all the senior teams included in the CIFA’s long term planning.
Our ladies will also benefit greatly from these upcoming matches. They have already proven to be a formidable team and we know that this type of international experience will help them to improve even more.” said Mr. Whittaker.
We wish all the best to our national teams and are certain that they’ll represent our beloved Cayman Islands with the usual discipline, passion, commitment, and maximum effort.
