Cayman National has announced a partnership with Cayman Cricket that will help strengthen the sport’s youth development programmes. Under the agreement Cayman National will assume title sponsorship of the Under-15 tournament, which is scheduled for 2024, but also support the year-round primary school league, the upcoming Under-19 competition and all cricket initiatives. The funding – totalling just over CI$50,000 – will include cash and an overall investment in uniforms, equipment, field branding, awards, trophies and prizes as well as motivational and educational opportunities for the youngsters.
Cricket has been identified as a ‘focus sport’ for the Cayman Islands and Cayman Cricket has been working hard to revitalise the game at all levels with special focus on developmental programmes within schools. Cricket programmes at the primary and secondary levels were successfully held in the 2022/2023 school year and these are being replicated in the 2023/2024 term with plans to significantly expand the number of participating schools and players for the U15 level.
“Cayman National’s commitment to Cayman Cricket is part of the Power to Make a Difference initiative, a corporate social responsibility programme run by our parent company Republic Bank in jurisdictions across the Caribbean. Historically, one of Cayman National’s focuses has been youth development, and we plan to continue our contributions in this area,” said Janet Hislop, CEO of Cayman National.
“We are very impressed with the work that Cayman Cricket has been doing to reignite passion for the sport at a grassroots level, starting with our young people. Cricket has always had the power to unite the region. We see it here in Cayman where the adult cricket fraternity is made up of a diverse group of players and fans who hail from all over the Caribbean and the world. We hope that this new partnership with Cayman Cricket will help to produce a new generation of cricket lovers who will advance the game and help carry on its legacy here in Cayman.”
Cayman National’s parent company, Republic Bank, is the title sponsor and official bank of the Caribbean Premier League, the annual Twenty20 cricket tournament held in the Caribbean.
“We are thrilled that Cayman National has decided to invest in cricket. There are a number of initiatives that we are eager to start implementing and Cayman National’s support will help to make them a reality,” said Courtney Myles, President of Cayman Cricket.
“Thanks in large part to Dave Bernard Jr, our Senior Development Officer and former West Indies allrounder, Cayman Cricket’s campaign in the schools has been very successful. We had almost 300 boys and girls from 12 schools, both private and government, participate in our 2022/2023 Inter Primary School Cricket Competition and about 100 boys and girls from five schools play in our 2022/2023 High School Under 15 Cricket Competition. The interest is there and now is the time to harness that enthusiasm. We believe with Cayman National’s support that we can continue to grow the sport and find new ways to expose our young people to the game, locally, regionally and internationally.”
