Premier of the Cayman Islands Honourable Juliana O’Connor-Connolly and a number of regional and global leaders participated in several business meetings yesterday (Thursday, 20 February) at the 48th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) being held in Barbados.

The day’s activities commenced with discussions involving United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Saudi Arabia’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs His Excellency Adel al-Jubeir on a shared theme of stronger regional partnerships and cooperation in a number of key areas including education, climate resiliency and meeting development goals.

A highlight of the day was a signing ceremony for Martinique to officially become an associate member of CARICOM.

Premier O’Connor-Connolly also attended a meeting of the caucus of the Heads of Government for in-depth discussions on a number of regional concerns. In commenting on the robust exchanges, she noted, “The region continues to demonstrate resiliency and agility to adapt in the face of worldwide change. Today’s meetings demonstrate the importance of exploring opportunities for strengthening global partnerships. I have been especially grateful to hear about the great strides in recovery made by our neighbours who were impacted by hurricanes last year.”

The final day of meetings will take place today Friday, 21 February.
