As of 4:30pm the Cayman Islands have been placed under a hurricane watch, in relation to a developing weather system in the southwest Caribbean.*
The weather system remains Potential Tropical Cyclone 18, however current weather models suggest the system is likely to develop into a Tropical Storm near the Cayman Islands with further strengthening to a Category 1 hurricane within the next 24 to 48 hours.
A hurricane ‘watch’ means that tropical storm force winds could begin affecting the Cayman Islands within 48 hours.
The Cayman Islands National Weather Service continues to monitor this system and residents are encouraged to follow official sources for the most accurate information.
