The Cayman Islands is set to resume Concacaf Nations League play next month with an eye on advancing through to the CNL Play-In as the Confederation released the tournament’s October schedule.
Cayman will face British Virgin Islands on Saturday, 12 Oct. before concluding Group Stage play by taking on St. Kitts and Nevis on Tuesday, 15 Oct. Both matches are slated to begin at 2:30 p.m. at Warner Park Football Stadium, in Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis.
“We are excited to get back on the pitch,” Cayman Islands Head Coach Joey Jap Tjong said. “We learned a lot from our first two matches of the tournament and look forward to another opportunity to get better and show what we can do.”
Cayman currently sits in second place in Group C with three points. The three group winners and the best second-place finisher will advance to the CNL Play-In. Over in Group B, second-place Anguilla is the only other League C team with three points.
“We just need to focus on the next match and playing our best for 90 minutes,” Jap Tjong said. “If we implement in the match what we work on in training and if we play with energy and play for one another, I’m confident the results will be positive.”
Cayman opened CNL play with a 1-0 win over BVI courtesy of a left-footed winner from Elijah Seymour before dropping a 4-1 decision to St. Kitts and Nevis. Captain Mason Duval scored the loan goal for Cayman in the loss.
The team has now won two of its last four matches dating back to June, including a 1-0 win over Antigua & Barbuda in World Cup qualifying.
“We’re a young team and we’re building momentum,” Jap Tjong said. “It’s great to see. The players are coming together.”
The fourth edition of the CNL kicked off in September with matches across all three Leagues (A, B, and C). Highlights included Seymour scoring the competition’s 1,000th goal. The match results and standings are available here.
A total of 37 CNL matches will be played next month (9-15 Oct.), concluding Group Stage play for Leagues A and C, while League B will play through November. The CNL Play-In will take place during the FIFA Match Window of November. It will consist of a single direct elimination round and eight teams: the fifth and sixth-place finishers from the League A Groups and the group winners and the best second-place finisher from League C.
