Cayman showcases attributes at Expo 2020 Dubai

Happening right now, the Cayman Islands is sharing the stage with another 191 countries around the world in Dubai’s Expo 2020 which, having suffered from delays due to the pandemic, finally lifted off in 2022.

A platform for showcasing world changing ideas, Dubai’s Expo 2020 follows in the footsteps of other historic world fairs, starting with the World Fair at London’s Crystal Palace in 1851.

The Cayman Islands has been able to participate as an Overseas Territory of the UK and can therefore enjoy its own segments on the UK Pavilion. The pavilions are essentially a blank canvas at which countries can showcase themselves to the world. Here, Cayman has been given a unique opportunity to reintroduce the Cayman Islands to the world and properly show off to the anticipated millions of visitors from all over the world everything this jurisdiction has, with regard to cultural and investment opportunities.

As the Expo runs over three months, from January to March 2022, Cayman has been given the UK pavilion in its entirety for one day each month to properly show the world all that this location has to offer. The UK Pavilion is based in the Opportunity District at Expo 2020 and is open from 10am - 10pm every day.

On Tuesday, 8 February, Caymanian art was a focus at the pavilion, with local artist Jason Kennedy actually participating at the event, representing Caymanian art. On show at the Expo was work by a variety of well-known Caymanian artists, including Dready art by Shane Aquart, as well as work by Kerwin Ebanks, Gordon Solomon, Chris Christian, Nasaria Suckoo-Chollette, and Randy Chollette.

Jason was working on a painting live at the pavilion and said it had been a poignant experience for him.

“We’ve got a ton of people coming through just seeing what were doing here. As you can see, I’m live painting. It’s an incredible honour to be representing Cayman and representing arts in Cayman as well,” he said.

Upcoming events include: Taste of Cayman on Friday, 11 February from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at the Ritz-Carlton, Dubai; the Cayman Islands at Smart City Expo from 15 to 16 February at DIFC Dubai; the Cayman Islands at the Dubai Boat Show 2022 from 8 to 12 March; the Cayman Islands at the World Art Dubai 2022 from 16 to 19 March; and finally, the Cayman Islands at the UK Pavilion on Tuesday, 22 March from 10:00 am - 10:00 pm at the UK Pavilion.
